Welcome to One World
Welcome to One World
-a homeschool newsletter for Unitarian Universalists
There is a tattered piece of paper on the wall of my office, now turned homeschooling room. It is Covenant #473 from our Singing the Living Tradition Hymnal. Each week in our church, we say this affirmation together, our voices joined as one.
In my home, I made one small change to the wording.
I hope author James Vila Blake approves.
Love is the spirit of this family,
And service its law.
This is our great covenant,
To dwell together in peace,
To seek the truth in love,
and to help one another.
So it is with our first issue of One World Homeschooling Newsletter. Homeschooling and our UU faith share an inseparable bond. In every aspect of our homeschooling we are reminded of our seven Unitarian Principles-
Last night I went for walk in our yard. The air was crisp and the wind whipped wildly, moaning secrets in my ear. The mango colored sun was beginning to set and I caught a glimpse of the tree fort that my husband built for and with our children. The buds on our Maple Tree are just beginning to swell and offer the prospect of wonderful things to come. The tree reminds me of the strength of our incredible homeschooling UU families across the nation, who every day, teach their children to love in justice, to seek peace, to take care of our Mother Earth and to accept one another and appreciate our differences.
I am honored and blessed to introduce and welcome you to our first issue of One World. Michael Schuler wrote: " The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth in the present moment, to appreciate the peace and beauty that are available now. It is not a matter of faith, it is a matter of practice."
Let One World be our everyday peace and beauty and our practice in home educating our children and may we all be blessed by this exciting new adventure.
In faith,
Beverly Burgess
